In what could be a significant victory for freedom of speech, US president Donald Trump has tweeted out that he will investigate twitter shadow banning of right wing users. It has recently been revealed that many twitter users on the right have a QFD shadowban, or Quality Filter Discrimination, including prominent Republicans. Twitter who have used shadow bans against conservative and right wing users ever since Donald Trump won the US presidency in November of 2016, in an effort to stealthily manipulate the public discourse away from the right, may have finally gone too far and drawn the attention of the US president.
Shadow banning for ideological reasons is at least a violation of the US constitution 1st amendment right of freedom of speech, and so could well be declared illegal, if put under enough scrutiny. You can check if your twitter handle is shadow banned here. A Quality Filter Discrimination shadow ban causes your tweets to be invisible in a search, including hashtags unless the quality filter is manually turned off. The quality filter is located on the search page, is turned on by default and will be reset each time you search. This drastically reduces the amount of impact users on the right can have on the public discourse, including stifling hashtags. And of course could have drastic implications for the 2018 mid terms and beyond to the 2020 elections, especially if many Republican politicians are shadow banned.
Twitter recently lost a landmark legal battle against Jared Taylor of American Renaissance because twitter’s policy of suspending accounts for any or no reason could be fraudulent and false representation of their claim to be a free speech platform. And Donald Trump’s tweet against shadow banning is another huge blow to the social media platform’s Orwellian censorship policy and ideological bias. Trump has called the practice of shadow banning discriminatory and illegal.
