In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Russian president Vladimir Putin has strongly criticized western liberal values of immigration, multiculturalism and gay rights, claiming they were an attack on traditional family values. He also claimed German chancellor Angela Merkel had made a cardinal mistake by opening the floodgates, allowing millions of refugees into her country.
Putin claimed the liberal idea had become obsolete and had come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population. The liberal idea pre-supposes that migrants can kill, rape and plunder with impunity because their rights as migrants have to be protected, and nothing needs to be done about it. But every crime must have its punishment.
He added the ruling elites had broken away from the people, but many western nations had admitted that some elements of the liberal idea, such as multiculturalism are no longer tenable. And this was the reason for the Trump phenomenon in the United States as well as other populist movements in Europe.
The ruling liberal elite cannot simply dictate neo-liberalism to everyone just like they have been attempting to do over the recent decades.
