Anime Right News – (ARN) The Russian defense ministry has made a statement on Thursday, April 12th, 2018 that the Syrian Government has regained full control over the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta after conquering the last rebel stronghold in the town of Douma, which, up till now, had been under the jurisdiction of The Jaish al-Islam militant group.
The area of Eastern Ghouta had been the biggest rebel stronghold in the vicinity of Damascus but many groups agreed to surrender after being pounded by Russia-aided government assaults and massive bombardment.
Earlier, the Jaysh al-Islam insurgents and their families evacuated Eastern Ghouta by use of the Muhyam al-Wafedin checkpoint. Approximately 8 thousand insurgents and 40 thousand family members have been reported to have evacuated from Douma. The Syrian Observatory for Human rights reported that the rebels surrendered heavy arms and their leader exited. This move on the part of the Jaish al-Islam comes after the civilians of Douma previously calling upon the rebels to agree to a ceasefire with the Syrian government in order to avert the consequences of a military operation and a supposed chemical weapons attack on Ghouta which raised the probability of US strikes. Both the Syrian Government and Russia have declared this attack to be bogus and commented that the reports of this attck are fake and fabricated by rebels to spur the US into action against Syria.
The head of Russia’s center for Syrian reconciliation Major General Yury Yevtushenko commented in a press conference to the Interfax news agency, “Today, a landmark event in the history of the Syrian Arab Republic took place. The state flag flown over a building … in the city of Douma marked the regained control over this settlement, and consequently over entire Eastern Ghouta.”
The Russian military police have also been deployed in the town of Douma as of Thursday, as reported by the RIA news agency. The Russian defense ministry quotes, “They are the guarantors of law and order in the town.”
In addition to these commentsby Russia, Iran, another Syrian ally, vows to stand by Syria in the event on “any foreign aggression.”“Syria’s enemies are angry because of its military advances against terrorist groups,” Ali Akbar Velayati, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s top adviser, explained to Iranian state TV during his visit to Eastern Ghouta’s bomb-shattered spoils.
This development in the tumultous Syrian timeline marks a major victory for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. Bouthaina Shaaban, a top adviser to Assad, described the army’s recapture of eastern Ghouta as a “decisive point” in the ongoing events in Syria in an interview on Wednesday. Assad himself acknowledged that any Western interference in Syria would only destabalise the region.
