Grammys Emergency 2018
This is the big one, Fam.
Jefferson Airplane may have had a female singer but this NPR Headline says it all: “New Study Shows Grave Lack Of Gender Diversity In the Music Industry.”
Why is this grave? Don’t even go there, Fam. A study was conducted by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. Quite frankly I’m so startled right now about this, I think I know what it must have been like getting one of those “missile incoming” texts a few weeks ago in Hawaii.
Do you know what the study found? Do you?
more than 90 percent of Grammy nominees in the past six years have been male.
“When it comes to songwriters, only 12 percent are female, and perhaps most egregiously, only 2 percent of 651 producers were women,” Smith says. “And only two of those producers were women of color.”
“There are nine male songwriters that are setting the agenda for popular culture across a fifth of the most popular songs over the last six years,” Smith says.
Breath that in, Famalamb because according to the studies coauthor, that all means:
Stacey Smith, co-author of the study — titled Inclusion in the Recording Studio? — says there is an “epidemic of invisibility” in the music industry, particularly in songwriting and producing.
We’re not talking about the kind of invisibility Chinamen fake in YouTube videos or what Solid Snake/Big Boss can do. As a matter of fact, I’m not even sure if invisibility is the right word. Maybe the people that are missing don’t exist because they don’t merit to be in those positions.
After all, there are only like 6 television companies. In other entertainment sectors oligarchy is the rule, not the exception.
If there is no reason to be worried about the oligarchs, don’t worry about what kind of terror will be blamed on Trump letting Israel annex Jerusalem, migrants or paying the bills.
