Markus Meechan, also known as Count Dankula, who we previously reported on when he was found guilty in a UK court of being “grossly offensive” under the Offensive Communications Act 2003 section 127, was sentenced March 23 to pay a fine of £800. In court, his lawyer announced Meechan’s intention to refuse any fines or community service handed down to him.
After sentencing, Dankula announced his intent to appeal.
"I owe the courts £800. I'm not fucking paying it. Instead, I'm going to appeal this...we need to make absolutely sure that we get this conviction overturned so that we can remove the standard that it sets. When a person's words and actions can have their intent and context completely ignored, they can be handcuffed, led to jail, have their ass dragged through the Scottish justice system for two years, and have their life completely ruined, and have their name completely destroyed by the mainstream media, and in the end of it, have a criminal record, and that can now happen to anyone over something as simple as a joke, I can't allow what me and my family went through to happen to anyone else; and if my case sets the standard for this then that just means it's gonna be so much easier for the Scottish justice service to do this to anyone."
Dankula's Full Statement
Within just a day of setting up a GoFundMe to appeal his case, Dankula had exceeded his initial goal of £100,000 and has raised over £160,000 at the time of this posting.
