In Tokyo Ghoul, the heroes and villains use a special power known as a Kagune. A term meaning blood ribbon.
A ribbon or riband is a thin band of material, typically cloth but also plastic or sometimes metal, used primarily as decorative binding and tying. Ribbons have innumerable uses in printing, ornamental functions such as garters or gifting, and symbolic purposes such as medals signifying heroic deeds.
A Kagune is composed of cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as “liquid muscles.”
In Tokyo Ghoul, the ribbon encompass all the aspects of meaning, as seen by the 4 types of Kagune the characters use:
Ukaku is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area, it specializes in highspeed attacks, usually from a distance. The primary method of attack is crystallizing their Kagune to deliver a highspeed torrent of spike-like projectiles.
Ukaku-type ghouls have a high chance of ending a battle quickly. A downside of this is users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time.
A heavy and extremely robust ribbon making them very well suited for defense.
Normally, Koukaku is shaped into armors or shields, but on the offense, they can be shaped into heavy weapons that are hard to wield, such as broadswords and hammers.
Rinkaku attacks take a form of tentacles usually numbering from one to 8 depending and are fast attack weapons reminiscent of flexible weapons such as staffs or fencing blades.
Being softer they allow the user to have an increased regeneration ability.
Typically a tail-like appearance using from 1-14 ribbons, this Kagune is an all-around balanced ribbon good for medium-distance attacks and has satisfactory offense, defense, and speed.
The balanced characteristics make the Kagune a preferred type for inexperienced investigators.
A new ghoul should always get to know their Kagune in order to best use their personal strengths when taking on enemies or investigating crimes.
It can also help you recognize other ghouls in the wild
Tokyo Ghoul is set in an alternate reality where"ghouls" live among the normal humans in secret, hiding their true nature to evade pursuit from the authorities.
