Backpage is most known for prostitution. Sex workers have claimed since the founding of the site in 2004 that its existence helps them operate with minimal risks. The federal government has been after the founders of the site, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, for years with no success.
This comes amid new legislation cracking down on websites that have been exploited by human traffickers and a heavy focus by the Trump Administration into sex crimes, human trafficking, and child prostitution.
