The first Israeli Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, read the Declaration of Independence of Israel on May 14th, 1948 in Tel Aviv. This was the fifth day of Iyar, the eighth month of the civil year, in the year 5708 according to the Israeli calendar. The Israeli's refer to this Holiday as Yom Ha'atzmaut. The holiday usually falls in April or May for anyone who uses the Gregorian Calendar. Next year it will fall on May 9th.
It's great the people of Jewish faith finally have a homeland to call their own, especially after being forcibly kicked out of 109 different countries and having faced a horrible history of persecution almost everywhere they go. With the recent rise in anti-semitism over the last few years throughout the world it's a privilege for the Israeli's to celebrate their country's 70th birthday. Happy Birthday, Israel-chan!
