An official with the Trump Administration told Reuters today that the United States will be withholding $65 million in aid "for future consideration," stating the U.S. needs to reevaluate "the way it [the United Nations Relief and Works Agency] operates and the way it is funded."
The U.S. will provide $60 million in aid to the UNRWA in support of the Palestinian population living in the area.
The 2 million Palestinians, mostly made up of refugees, living in the Gaza Strip suffer from an unemployment rate of 42% and 80% of individuals living in the Strip rely on humanitarian aid for food. Israel has the Gaza Strip under an airtight land, sea, and air blockade which, it has been in place since 2007. Travel is very tightly restricted. The Gaza strip has been called, "the world's largest open-air prison".
