Let me guess, you want me to nuke them all?
-Trump
That statement came from a meeting last year. Various topics were discussed among the national security team. Once the conversation reached Bolton, Trump let out the line, and the others laughed.
With Iranian tension rising, Bolton has probably been a real thorn in President Trump's side. Allegedly, according to White House officals, Trump has repeatedly called out the old hawk.

During a meeting with Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, Trump turned to Bolton and asked:
John, is Ireland one of those countries you want to invade?
Yeah, John Bolton is absolutely a hawk. If it was up to him he’d take on the whole world at one time, okay? But that doesn't matter because I want both sides.
- Trump
That was a statement Trump made on NBC's Meet The Press.
According to an unnamed senior admin, Trump added to this by stating:
John has never seen a war he doesn’t like.

So why the hell would Trump bother?
According to one unnamed official:
He thinks that Bolton’s bellicosity and eagerness to kill people is a bargaining chip when he’s sitting down with foreign leaders. Bolton can be the bad cop and Trump can be the good cop. Trump believes this to his core.”
Trump reportedly told nervous confidants:
Bolton is OK, he wants to start 3 wars a day, but I have him on a leash
While these are alleged, they certainly seem consistent with Trump's previous statements.
