The Barcelona native defeated Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay in a hard-fought match

Bouzas, Cavallé and Romero fall in the first round of the tournament

The Barcelonan Rebekka Mazarova has managed to advance through the first round of the WTA125 Solgironès International Women’s Open after defeating the Turk Cagla Buyukakcay in a hard fought match that lasted until the third set.

Masarova started the game very seriously and dominantly, but the Turkish player raised the level and won the second set thanks to her aggressive play. Nonetheless, Masarova narrowly won the third set 6:3, 3:6, 6:3 thanks to her physical and mental resilience.

Thus, the first-placed of the tournament gets to the round of 16, where meets Ylena In-Albon, a 24-year-old Swiss tennis player and 149th in the world. In addition, the semi-finals in doubles will also be played this Thursday, in which Aliona Bolsova from Empordà will take part. They meet the Colombians Yuliana Lizarazo and Maria Paulina Pérez Garcia.

The Cross: Bouzas, Cavallé and Romero

Today, five other Spanish tennis players also took part in the first round of the tournament. Just one of them, the Barcelonan Guiomar Maristany (who faced Yvonne Cavallé from the Balearic Islands) managed to reach the round of 16. Cavallé, as well as Jessica Bouzas from Galicia and Leyre Romero and Angela Fita from Valencia lost their games.

Even so, Romero’s game against the Austrian Sinja Kraus deserves special mention. It was the most spectacular game of the day. The Valencian fought until the end after completing a set and going 5-2 in the second set. He managed to bounce back and grabbed up to five match points in the second set to force the final set’s ‘tiebreak’. After almost three hours of play in a strong side wind, Kraus won the match 6:3, 5:7, 7:6 (8:6).
